"Unveiling the Wonders of Coda, One Day at a Time" |

β
As we are transitioning to the new newsletter, our last three Coda docs of the day are Coda Doctorate projects by our own team.
β
Today's doc was created by Jennifer, our amazing copywriter. She focuses on social media, AI, SEO and creates a majority of the copy on our site!
Happy Thursday!
β
We just lost Owen to University of Georgia . . . in a good way, I mean. He recently moved to the dorms.
Owen is a freshman majoring in electrical engineering -- he wants to transfer to Georgia Tech in a couple years and focus on robotics and AI.
β
That means (aside from Calvin), we have Evan -- our one last 16-year-old teenager left in the house.
And he LOVES showers. REALLY hot showers.
β
Now I have the luxury of working from home, but my wife is a pharmacist, so obviously she has to go to work.
And even though we recently replaced our hot water heater, Evan will DRAIN the house of hot water in his pre-school morning shower.
β
We had this fierce battle over the hot water -- "Evan, you're running the water too hot." . . . "Mom, no I'm not."
"Yes, you are."
If you have teenagers, you know that conversation went nowhere.
β
So this is the replacement shower head I bought for Evan's shower. And it changed everything.
β
Now it doesn't let you control the temperature remotely (that was my first thought, lol).
β
However, what it does do is translate "hot" into a crystal-clear, definitive numerical metric.
The conversation went from "Stop using the hot water" to "don't run higher than 101"--which he happily agreed to.
As a bonus, it turns red when it's over 100 degrees, so it feels hotter.
Not only does he get to set it to 101, but he gets to shower in the "red zone."
β
Obviously we don't have cameras in his shower, so technically he could be lying (metrics don't prevent dishonesty).
But he's a pretty honest kid and he's been taking 101-degree showers for a while now.
β
And the problem is solved. Happy wife, happy life.
β
When you agree on the standard of measurement, metrics help remove subjectivity and emotion from the conversation--neither of which help solve the problem.
