Happy Monday!
Have you ever seen the movie Roxanne with Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah?
β
Based on Cyrano de Bergerac, Fire Chief Charlie is a hopeless romantic with an obscenely large nose that makes him too embarrassed to pursue relationships.
Chris is a good-looking, newly hired firefighter in Charlie's fire station, and becomes smitten with Daryl Hannah.
Unfortunately, Chris severely lacks the ability to speak with any semblance of a romance.
Charlie decides to help Chris pursue Hannah by hiding behind a tree and secretly whispering to Chris the words to say.
β
Sound familiar? If not, it will.
β
I think I'm a pretty good speller, but I use spell check.
I think I have a pretty large vocabulary, but I use a thesaurus.
I know a lot, but I still use Google.
In the 80s, I used encyclopedias.
β
I think I'm a pretty good writer and I have an English degree, but I still use AI to help me . . . A LOT.
I'm not ashamed to say that.
β
There's a stigma attached to AI . . . as if you are "cheating." That's bullshit.
β
I told my team that they can use AI anytime for any reason, even if they are communicating with me in Slack.
β
It can save time by preventing ambiguity.
It can make you more confident.
It can teach you to be a better communicator.
It can often get your thoughts across faster and clearer.
β
The only way AI is "cheating" in business is if you are using AI to act like you know things that you really don't.
In Roxane, Chris was portraying himself to be someone he wasn't.
β
But that's not an AI problem--I could do that LONG before AI ever existed.
β
Just like spell check, thesauruses, encyclopedias . . . it's just another tool.
Don't make people feel bad for using tools.
