Happy French Fry-Day! π

Human beings REALLY suck at one thing. Developers especially.
β
ESTIMATING THINGS.
β
Let me ask you a simple question . . . "How much does a blue whale weigh?" I've asked this question to a room full of developers and the answers stretched from 2 tons to 100 tons--that's a MASSIVE range.
We're just horrible at estimating--even what seems to be a pretty straightforward answer.
β
One day, a team at Coda decided to cap the number of rows you can sync at 10,000. Why? Probably to limit resources. If you give people 5 billion rows, they're going to fill up 5 billion rows. We're all really good at that. So they picked a good round number.
And I don't have any inside information, but I'm pretty certain that limit isn't going to increase before Coda Brain is released.
β
In my Slack Magic pack, you can sync in your Slack users. Yesterday, a Slack Magic+ customer raised a concern that they are nearing 10K users and didn't know what to do.
Here's the problem:
- They're already filtering bots and deleted users (using my pack) -- they can't filter any more
- Coda only allows one sync table per document
β
How did I solve this?
I added a second sync table.
β
The first table is called SlackUsers. The second table is called AdditionalSlackUsers.
They can now sync 20,000 users.
β
How do we segment both lists? I added StartName and EndName parameters to both sync tables.
For the first table, set the EndName to "M" . . . this syncs all users UP TO the letter M (including users that start with numbers).
For the second table, set the StartName to "M" . . . this syncs all users FROM the letter M.
β
In the end, we had two tables with roughly a 60/40 split.
β
On the downside, tables can only reference one SlackUsers table, so they would need to add a custom column formula to lookup across both tables. Annoying, but not a big deal.
β
So when faced with row limits in Coda, just remember the famous line from Chief Brody in Jaws . . . You're gonna need a bigger boat!
In honor of this solution, today's Deal of the Day is Slack Magic+, now at 30% off at The Low Code Groceryβperfect for navigating those big user lists without sinking your doc with row limits.
